California’s Premiere Shamisen Power Couple

Kyle Abbott and Su Bunjamin are passionate shamisen performers, educators, and cultural ambassadors dedicated to sharing the richness of Japanese music with a global audience. Kyle is the founder of Bachido, the first international shamisen community, and has been instrumental in making the instrument accessible worldwide through hands-on instruction, instrument building, and genre-crossing collaborations. Su, formerly based in Berlin and now in California, is the co-founder of Shamisen Berlin e.V. and the bilingual platform Shamisen-Zentrale, where she combines academic insight with community-driven teaching to deepen cultural understanding through music. Together, they perform at festivals, corporate and cultural events across the U.S. and Europe, repair and restore shamisen, and lead engaging workshops that welcome learners of all backgrounds into the world of traditional Japanese folk music.
